Making an offshore PLM team work

What we have learned about running Windchill work from Morocco for European engineering departments, and what their IT leaders should ask any offshore partner.

Offshore PLM work has a mixed reputation, and much of it is earned: handovers across time zones, engineers who rotate every few months, and knowledge that leaves with them. Here is what makes the difference, from the side of the team doing the work.

Share the working day

The most underrated factor is the clock. A team that is online when your engineers are can join stand-ups, answer questions within minutes and fix a failed release the same afternoon. Morocco is on or one hour off Central European Time, which removes most of the friction that makes offshore work slow.

Use the customer’s tools

We work in your code repositories, your boards and your chat, with accounts you control. That makes the work visible as it happens, and it means nothing is lost if the engagement ends: the code, the tickets and the discussions are already yours.

Keep the same people

Windchill knowledge is specific to each installation. A team that stays in place for years learns your data model, your integrations and your people. Ask any partner how long engineers typically stay on one customer, and what happens to knowledge when they move.

Automate the handover points

Most offshore problems appear when work changes hands. Pipelines, automated tests and written runbooks reduce those moments: a change is built, tested and deployed the same way, whoever wrote it.

Questions to ask an offshore partner

  • Which hours will the team actually be online, and in which time zone?
  • Will we work with named engineers, and for how long?
  • Do you work in our tools and environments, or yours?
  • How do you keep production data inside our systems?
  • What does a release look like, step by step?

The answers say more about how the engagement will go than any rate card.
