The starting point
Windchill ran on physical servers that were reaching end of life. Test environments were months behind production, and every release needed a planned outage.
What we did
- Packaged the Windchill services as containers, with one deployment template per environment.
- Set up the cloud platform, storage and networking as code, in the customer’s own cloud account.
- Moved the database to a managed service and the file vaults to cloud storage, rehearsing the migration three times.
- Added pipelines that build, test and deploy every tagged release.
Results
A complete test environment is now created from production in about four hours. Routine releases roll out without interrupting users, and a failed release is rolled back in one step.
